In Michigan do lawyers charge a fee for handling a first party claim against insurance for a client?

Depends on the firm. There is not ethics or other rule on this. Some firms may handle this work without fee if they are also pursuing a larger personal injury claim on your behalf. Some may still charge a fee for this work. If there’s no PI component to the matter, you’ll almost certainly have to pay an attorney for pursuing a related claim.
